Dual Diagnosis
Individuals with substance abuse and psychiatric disorders, a "dual diagnosis", are a common occurrence. "Dual diagnosis" is defined by the presence of both mental health disorders and substance abuse disorders such as alcohol and/or drug dependence or abuse. There are a variety of mental health disorders that can be associated with substance abuse. Some of these disorders include: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anti-social personality disorder, narcissistic personality, and depression. Depending on what disorder is present, the symptoms of a "dual diagnosis" patient can be different. An estimated twenty percent of those with a drug or alcohol addiction also battle a psychiatric illness. Sadly, only eleven percent of the population with "dual diagnosis", receives adequate treatment to address both issues. In an effort to combat this reality, and meet the unique needs of our clients, our staff psychiatrist, Mark Willner M.D. is a specialist in addiction medicine.
Upon entering any of Recovery First's substance abuse treatment programs our clients are seen by the psychiatrist for an evaluation. At this time an assessment will be made of any medications our clients are taking and what recommended changes, if any, are appropriate. Regular follow up appointments are conducted to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments. In addition to his position as Medical Director at Recovery First, Dr. Willner is on staff at several area hospitals and treatment centers. He also operates a private practice in Sunrise, Florida. He has focused much of his studies and professional career treating addicted clients with co-occuring mental disorders.
Recovery First also offers other levels of care. Our most intensive level is Inpatient Treatment but we also have other treatment options like our Day/Night Program, Intensive Outpatient Program or Sober Living.
