Addiction Treatment Modalities

Recovery First West uses treatment modalities shown to have benefits in treating addiction and recovery. Our modalities are research-based and used in conjunction with our addiction and co-occurring disorders curriculum. Currently, Recovery First West uses the following treatment modalities:

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational Interviewing is used to assist the client in moving from ambivalence about addiction treatment to a healthier state of genuine desire for change. MI can help the client feel ready for treatment to change harmful behaviors like substance abuse.

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT has been shown to be effective in the treatment of addiction as well as co-occurring mental health disorders. CBT encourages the client to address thinking patterns and eliminate or phase out the unhealthy ones that drive unhealthy behaviors such as substance abuse.

  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Like CBT, REBT helps the client identify automatic and negative thought patterns that are recurring and harmful. REBT can help the client identify negative thinking patterns and replace them with healthier thoughts.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT has been shown to be effective in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. By helping the client with emotional regulation, DBT helps the client control actions and behaviors that are self-destructive. DBT may also help the client build skills for improving self-regulation.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR has been shown to be beneficial for the client who has a personal history of traumatic experiences, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or other trauma exposure such as sexual assault, domestic violence, natural disasters, wartime violence, and other events perceived as traumatic by the client. EMDR improves emotional stability and aids in symptom reduction, which helps address both addiction and co-occurring disorders.

  • Trauma Therapy

For the client with a personal history of events such as sexual assault, domestic violence, wartime violence, or other trauma, we offer different trauma-focused therapies. These include Seeking Safety, which is a trauma program developed by Lisa M. Najavits, PhD, shown to be beneficial for the client suffering from addiction and co-occurring Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
