Cigna Insurance for Rehab: Your Options as an Employee

If you’re struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, trying to figure out your insurance coverage can be extremely stressful. Fortunately, you may be able to get extensive coverage through employer-provided Cigna insurance for rehab. Due to recent laws – and the increasing prevalence of workplace addiction – many employers are now offering a wide range of mental health benefits to addicts. If you’re currently in a group contract with Cigna, it’s imperative that you understand your options as an employee.

The Mental Health Parity Act

The original Mental Health Parity Act was passed in 1996. It required that companies with fifty or more employees spend as much on mental health benefits as they do on medical and surgical care. However, this law had a several loopholes and limitations. Sunset provisions and disagreements over the nature of substance abuse allowed many companies to avoid the new requirements.

Fortunately, the Health Parity and Addiction Equality Act was passed in 2008. It forbade employers from applying any additional restrictions on coverage for addicts over those already put in place by their insurance companies. It also disallowed large companies from demanding higher out-of-pocket costs from people who need drug treatment.

Ultimately, mental health parity may help you to get access to medical detox, outpatient care, and long-term inpatient treatment. To find out the exact benefits available through your employer, you’ll need to consult your employee assistance program counselor. Like most insurance providers, Cigna insurance for rehab uses EAPs to efficiently provide mental health benefits to their customers.

The Benefits of COBRA

The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act was passed in 1985. It applied to several sectors of the economy, but its main purpose was to help laid-off employees retain access to their healthcare benefits. In most cases, workers can continue to get coverage for medical care for a year and a half after they leave their jobs.

One caveat to COBRA is that employees are usually required to pay large monthly premiums once they leave their jobs. However, one large monthly fee can still be far cheaper than paying out-of-pocket for a one, two, or three-month inpatient program. If you’ve lost your job because of your addiction, then COBRA may be what you need to afford drug treatment, recover, and find new employment.

What to do When You’re Self-Employed

If you’re self-employed and contracting for insurance on your own, Cigna still offers several options. They include:

  • Open Access Plans: You can choose doctors inside or outside of your preferred network. In-network care is cheaper, but you can still get coverage if you need to attend an out-of-network clinic.
  • Open Access Value Plans: These provide the same options as Open Access, but with lower monthly premiums and higher out-of-pocket costs.
  • Health Savings Plan: Use your own savings account to pay for current expenses or save for the future. These plans may be especially useful if you’re going to need long-term psychiatric care, medications, or outpatient treatment.

Despite all of the free information available, finding coverage through Cigna insurance for rehab can still be complex and confusing.
