Group-Based Treatments for Drug Rehab

Group therapies can provide safe environments for drug rehab patients to share emotional stories and make critical personal breakthroughs. While individual counseling is usually the most important drug rehab therapy, some patients make the most progress when they work with other addicts, family members, or close friends. The solidarity and valuable insight that like-minded people provide are essential for some addicts to fully address their harmful behaviors and deep-seated personality problems. For addicts to make the most of their drug rehab programs, they need to understand the ways that group-based therapies can help them recover and deal with ongoing cravings.

Peer Group Discussions

One of the most widely-used addiction therapies is peer group discussion. During clinical rehab, addiction counselors will facilitate discussions between addicts from all walks of life. People attending inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient drug rehab programs will come together to share their stories and give each other valuable advice for dealing with cravings. Some of these addicts may be seeking first-time care, while others will be undergoing rehab for a recent relapse.

This is the most effective form of therapy for many addicts. People are sometimes more willing to divulge personal information with a group of people who share a common problem than with a single counselor. Also, experienced addicts who have already sought treatment and suffered relapse can give extremely helpful insight to first-time patients.

Family Counseling

Addicts who maintain contact with parents, siblings, spouses, and other close relatives often engage in family therapies during their clinical treatments. Addiction counselors will invite these family members to participate in discussions where they talk about ways in which addictive behaviors have hurt them all.

These therapies can be extremely beneficial in establishing positive family dynamics that support patients’ post-rehab sobriety – especially in cases where addicts still live with certain relatives. A happy home gives addicts a safe haven from the addiction triggers, emotional stressors, and compromising environments of the outside world.

Teen Group Therapy

Adolescent addicts sometimes need special drug rehab programs to steer their lives in better directions. While group therapies typically involve people from all walks of life, teens are often resistant to advice and insight from other age groups.

Thankfully, there are rehab centers across the country that cater specifically to young people. The group sessions at these clinics involve teen patients who can give each other excellent advice for dealing with drug cravings during the trying time of adolescence.

Post-Rehab Community Support

Most addicts will need additional support once they complete their drug rehab programs. Clinical treatments last a few months at most, but staying sober requires lifelong effort. Community support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous exist in communities throughout the United States and allow addicts the chance to continue with group-oriented therapies.

One of the greatest benefits of these support groups is that they help like-minded people form accountability partnerships. When one person begins to falter in their recovery efforts or experience unexpected cravings, their partner can help them avoid relapse. Overall, these partnerships can make the difference between successful recoveries and long returns to drugs and alcohol.
