Paying for Addiction Treatment without Insurance

The lack of insurance coverage for drug rehab is one of the most pressing problems among addicts. Clinical addiction treatment is the best way for most people to get clean, but finding the money to pay for it can be extremely difficult. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways for uninsured addicts to get the help they need. If you’re an addict who’s struggling financially, you should be aware of the following options for free and low-cost drug rehab.

Participating in Clinical Trials

To develop new therapies and medications, rehab specialists will often use clinical trials. For little to no cost, addicts can act as test subjects for new rehabilitation programs. The downsides to this option are that new medications can have unforeseen side effects, and that certain therapies may prove to be ineffective. Addicts considering participation in clinical trials should carefully consider the risks and benefits involved in the specific studies for which they qualify.

Vouchers for Treatment

A federal initiative called “Access to Recovery” provides vouchers which addicts can use towards rehab clinics in certain states. However, these vouchers don’t work at all clinics, and there are many states which don’t participate at all. In most cases, eligible participants in the program are provided with a list of faith-based or community-based providers from which to choose.

Public Rehab Centers

State and federal governments operate a wide range of addiction treatment clinics. Some of these are completely free, while others require patients to pay only what they can. In some cases, patients who can’t pay anything up front will be able to set up gradual payment plans.

These clinics range from detox-only facilities to inpatient centers. One of the main downsides is that waiting lists are usually long. Their standards of care may also be lower than in private clinics. However, they still provide evidence-based counseling and other proven therapies. For most addicts, receiving a lower level care at a free clinic is far better than getting none at all.

Help from Religious Organizations

Faith-based community support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous offer alternative treatment to addicts who can’t afford clinical care. Most of these groups use the now-famous twelve step model for helping people get clean. This model requires that addicts admit to their problems, seek help from a higher power, and attempt to maintain sobriety through meditation and prayer.

Overall, these programs have helped many drug addicts and alcoholics stay clean, but they are often most successful for people who already completed clinical treatment. They do not typically include detoxification – an important first step in the recoveries of people addicted to opiates and amphetamines.

Need-based Assistance

Private clinics can be expensive, but some of them are generous enough to offer financial aid. In some cases, they may waive most of the costs for uninsured addicts. At other times, they may evaluate patients’ finances and alter costs accordingly.

If you’re an uninsured addict, don’t give up on clinical rehab. Getting the right treatment is a life or death issue, and there are many ways for you to find affordable, effective care. Call the number above to speak with one of our representatives, and get started on a drug rehab program that will have you living the life you truly deserve.
