What to Do During Downtime in Drug Rehab

Wisely spending free time can actually have dramatic impacts on drug rehab patients’ recoveries. Inpatients spend eight to ten hours per day in therapy, but that still leaves them with another six to eight hours to fill. It is important for them to use this time to think, relax, recharge, and tend to a variety of personal needs. Addicts considering clinical treatment should make plans to effectively use their downtime to bolster their recovery efforts and endure the sometimes difficult aspects of drug treatment. Here are a few of the best activities.

Exercise

Most rehab clinics provide gyms and sport facilities where patients can exercise. After emotional counseling sessions, a hard workout can be an excellent way to relieve stress. Maintaining workout habits may also be important to addicts who are already passionate about fitness. Finally, regular exercise is an important part of staying healthy and fighting continued drug cravings after detox.

Chores

Inpatients are typically required to cook, clean, and do other basic housework for themselves. While these tasks may seem like annoyances in the outside world, they can help people stay grounded in unfamiliar clinical environments. Maintaining normal routines also helps addicts to apply their new lifestyles to the outside world after treatment.

Group Outings

Rehab clinicians will sometimes take groups of patients on outings to movies, parks, or shops. They may also go to beaches or take hiking trips. These outings are usually optional, but they can be a great way for patients to socialize and experience the outside world. The outdoor activities also allow them to enjoy the serenity and calming effects of nature.

Meditation and Reflection

Addicts who are more introverted may prefer to spend their free time in quiet reflection. Social and physical activities are fun, but some patients need time alone to recharge and prepare themselves for further therapy. Also, daily meditation can help any addict keep a calm, positive state of mind – something that’s extremely helpful during counseling sessions and group discussions.

Prayer

Spirituality helps many addicts find inner strength and greater meaning in their lives. Some addicts will become more spiritual as they go through rehab, while others will use long-held beliefs to comfort themselves. Additionally, addicts often come to adopt certain religions during and after clinical treatment. Some rehab facilities are faith-based, as are many of the most popular community support groups.

Recreational Activities

Rehab centers usually provide televisions, movies, and other multimedia for patients to enjoy during their free time. High-end or “luxury” facilities may have pools and saunas, as well. However, clinics often prohibit personal computers, cell phones, and other devices which may prove to be too distracting.

Alternative Therapies

Most inpatients will undergo evidence-based therapies including counseling, group discussions, and family therapy. However, some facilities offer alternative treatments such as acupuncture and yoga. Patients are not usually required to attend these additional therapies, though some addicts find that they help with relaxation.
